So you want to learn to play the guitar. One of the first questions that you need to ask yourself is whether you want to play an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar. There are a variety of factors that can help you determine what type of guitar will best suit you, but if you are considering electric guitars, here are a few factors to take into consideration:
Unlike acoustic guitars, electric guitars do not have hollow bodies. This means that when you play this type of guitar the sound is pretty quiet and you need an amplifier to help produce more volume. Of course, this means that electric guitars have knobs and buttons that you need to learn how to use, whereas acoustic guitars do not have any of these accessories that need to be figured out. But even with more buttons and knobs to deal with, electric guitars are actually easier for most musicians to play. The strings on electric guitars are much easier to press down and they are made of lighter materials. This fact alone means that anyone learning to play the electric guitar will not have to deal with the sore fingers that come from learning to play an acoustic guitar.
Aside from these differences, however, possibly the most important factor to consider when choosing a type of guitar is what type of music you want to play. Naturally, if you love acoustic music, you’ll want an acoustic guitar; but if you love rock music, electric guitars are the choice for you.
