Did you know that the term for a musical instrument that produces sound from vibrating a stretched surface is a “membranophone”? It’s true. And most membranophones are commonly referred to as drums. Because of the simplicity of their structure, membranophones—or drums—have a long history and many drums remain in the same form as they were hundred of years ago. Have you ever heard of a snare drum? All snare drums are are a circular drum with a type of membrane stretched over it which is then struck to product a sound. The simplicity of the design of snare drums means that they have been used for years by a variety of people and cultures to produce music. In fact, drums have been historically used by various tribes people as way to communicate with each other. Historically, native people used drums as part of warfare and even today drums are used by the military for various functions.
Of course, most of the drums that are used today are used to produce music. There are even drums that are specially made for different types of music, including rock and jazz. Most drums today consist of a set of drums, which include a bass drum, snare and tom drums, and cymbals. To play the drums, a musician must develop a good sense of rhythm and musicality and playing the drums also requires a good level of dexterity. And while many people may not realize it, there is actually a great level of practice and skill that goes into learning how to be a good drummer.
