An increasingly popular type of guitar, bass guitars are similar to regular guitars but are lower in pitch and have a longer scale. And though bass guitars are similar to acoustic or electric guitars, these guitars are actually related to violins and violas. Bass guitars are available in both fretted and fretless styles, but it is more common for people to use bass guitars that have frets. Bass guitars are played in a similar manner to regular guitars, where the player holds the bass guitar horizontally across his or her body.
The main difference between bass guitars and classic guitars is the number of strings on the instrument. A bass guitar only has four strings. But like other guitars, these types of guitars are most often made of wood such as alder or mahogany. It is important to keep in mind, however, that the type of wood that the guitar is made effects the sound quality of the guitar. Other style considerations when it comes to choosing a bass guitar include the type of finish on the wood of the guitar (colored or clear), designs or ornamentation on the body of the guitar, whether the bass guitar is headed or headless, and whether it includes artificial materials. Most bass guitars are made of solid bodies, but there are some models where the bodies are hollow. The type of bass guitar that you choose will depend on your sound preferences and your playing style.
